Andhra Pradesh Assembly Election: Andhra Pradesh Assembly Elections and Lok Sabha Elections Preparations are going on in full swing. Meanwhile, Assembly Speaker Tammineni Sitaram took major action on the complaint of state Chief Minister Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) and opposition party Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Sitaram disqualified eight sitting MLAs from their posts on the basis of the complaint.
Sitaram has disqualified four MLAs each of YSRCP and TDP. According to a circular issued by the Assembly Speaker’s office on Tuesday (February 27, 2024), the disqualified members include TDP’s Madalo Giridhar Rao, Karanam Balaram, Vallabhaneni Vamsi and Vasupalli Ganesh and YSRCP’s Anam Ramnarayan Reddy, Mekapati Chandrasekhar Reddy, K. Sridhar Reddy and Undavalli Sridevi.
On what basis was the decision taken?
According to the circular, “Under the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and the Members of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on the Ground of Defection Rules), 1986, the Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly has declared the members disqualified with effect from 26 February 2024.” ,
According to political analysts, by-elections are unlikely to be required despite the disqualification of the MLAs as assembly elections are expected to be held in a few weeks.

The Speaker of the Assembly had issued a notice to all the eight members to get their views before disqualifying them. Recently, TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu had released the list of candidates for the elections, in which the name of Sridhar Reddy was also included. Neither the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) nor the TDP are currently part of the BJP-led NDA and the opposition alliance ‘India’.
